Plans for data center in Moncalieri, Italy, put on hold by town mayor
Before its application was halted, the project was billed as Italy’s ‘largest’ data center
An application by real estate developer Moncalieri Logistics and prompted by real estate fund Logistics Capital Partners (LCP) to build a data center in Moncalieri, northern Italy, has been halted by its municipal authorities.
Billed as Italy’s largest data center application, the project will now not advance through the municipality’s planning process, said local mayor Lorenzo Mauro, so long as several factors related to its construction and operation remain unaddressed. DCD has approached the municipality of Moncalieri and LCP for comment.
“Several responses related to environmental factors, energy consumption, and jobs are lacking,” said Mauro, in comments reported by la Repubblica. “Significant concerns about the project have emerged: I will discuss this with my majority and then send a communication to the proponents.”
The land planned for the data center in Moncalieri’s former industrial complex of Industria Libraria Tipografica Editrice (ILTE) was acquired by real estate developer LCP in 2022 for €9 million ($10.1m), originally to develop a warehouse on the site for the German ecommerce firm Zalando. The proposed data center would have an electrical capacity of 576MW, occupy 2.9 million sq ft (270,000 sqm) of floor space, and create 320 permanent jobs upon opening.
The project, however, has been opposed by councillors within Mayor Laura’s governing coalition in Moncalieri, because the developer has failed to mitigate issues relating to the project’s impact on the local environment and public health. Though the development’s progress through the planning process has been halted, the application could still move ahead if the municipality receives assurances that changes will be made to the project by the developer.
There are 13 operational data centers in Piedmont concentrated around Turin, according to DataCenterMap. La Repubblica reported in September 2026, however, that the national transmission system operator Terna had received 64 grid connection requests for a total of 13.13GW, placing Piedmont second only to Lombardy in volume of power requests. In response, the former’s regional government has proposed a law designed to regulate new data center planning applications, designed to be more stringent than neighboring Lombardy’s equivalent Regional Law No. 11/2026.
