D-Wave delivers Advantage2 quantum computer to Italy
System has been funded by SQT and will support the region's quantum computing ambitions
D-Wave has delivered an Advantage2 quantum computer to Lombardy, Italy.
Dubbed VoltaB1, the system was funded by Swiss Quantum Technology SA (SQT). The quantum computer has been deployed in support of Italy’s Q-Alliance initiative, which aims to create “the world’s most powerful quantum hub” and develop an open, responsible, and sustainable ecosystem in Lombardy, northern Italy.
The €10 million ($11.6m) deal between D-Wave and SQT was first announced in October 2025. Under the terms of the deal, SQT has acquired 50 percent of VoltaB1’s capacity for five years and holds the option to purchase the full system.
First unveiled in 2022, D-Wave’s Advantage2 quantum computer features more than 4,400 qubits and has been designed for quantum and hybrid quantum applications. The company said the system hosted by SQT will be accessible to customers via D-Wave’s Leap quantum cloud service.
“Bringing Italy’s first annealing quantum computer to Como marks a historic milestone toward making quantum computing a working capability for Italian innovation and industry,” said Dr. Baratz, CEO of D-Wave. “Italy has exceptional scientific talent and industrial strength. Together with SQT and Q-Alliance, we can give Italian teams the technology and hands-on experience to tackle complex problems, develop applications that can move into production, and build expertise in the country. That is how quantum infrastructure becomes industrial advantage.”
Thomas F. Darden, acting CEO, SQT, added: “The arrival of the Advantage2 system in Lombardy puts physical infrastructure behind our vision for Italian quantum innovation. Our investment is intended to connect researchers and businesses with advanced computing resources, support the development of useful applications and help build the expertise that will sustain Italy’s role in the quantum economy.”
